Matanzas is not alone! The phrase that sparked a global wave of solidarity

The alarming number of people infected with SARS-CoV-2 in the Cuban province of Matanzas generated a huge wave of solidarity, initially driven by ordinary citizens and private businesses, with the sending of medicines, clothes, toiletries and other supplies.

On social networks, groups coordinated collection campaigns, using cars, bicycles, motorcycles and even on foot. The aim was to gather the largest amount of essential products possible and, on these same platforms, initiatives related to transportation, lodging for doctors and free food abounded.

The Clandestina enterprise – dedicated to the sale of exclusive clothing items and based in Havana – recently announced the arrival of the first shipment to the Cardenas Hospital and to the Evangelical Seminary, designed for the Matanzas Pediatric Hospital.

Alongside others, the business put together donations for the residents and the sick in that western province: antibiotics, vitamins, toilet paper, cleaning liquids, packs of face masks, more than 200 syringes, disposable diapers, toys, soaps, detergent and toothpaste.

Private cars and trucks, associated with self-employment, offered their vehicles to take the donations free of charge to what is also known as the Athens of Cuba. Likewise, some taxi drivers offered free transportation for health personnel.

Social networks also spread the initiatives of entrepreneurs such as Juan Monzón, a 71-year-old from Matanzas, who made available his hostel in Cárdenas, free of charge, for the lodging of Cuban doctors coming from other provinces to support local staff.

Agricultural cooperative member, Disney María, drove her truck from Placetas, in Villa Clara, with the purpose of taking mangoes to health centers in Matanzas. For example, she donated 1,500 kilograms of mangoes to the Faustino Pérez University Hospital.

The Cuban Electric Motorcycle Club worked jointly with the University of Havana to transport and deliver donations to support families in Matanzas. Meanwhile, the Union of Cuban Journalists called on its members all over the country to join the collection of essential materials for people in isolation centers.

Digital platforms also report the decision of thousands of Americans to collect more than half a million dollars for the purchase of 6 million syringes for Cuba’s vaccination campaign against COVID-19.

For their part, Cubans living in Canada sent a shipment weighing approximately 90 kilograms to the Julio Aristegui Villamil Hospital, in the municipality of Cárdenas – where more than 200 patients are currently admitted – consisting of gloves, masks, catheters, syringes, among other supplies.

The Association of Cuban Residents in Austria, as well as Cubans in Spanish cities such as Madrid, Valencia and Barcelona; in Belgium, Holland and many other countries, sent containers with beds, medicines, laboratory tests, face shields and gowns.

Some media also mention the call on Twitter issued by the Cuban Pixel enterprise for material and monetary donations, and the plea by Rocío Baró, a graduate in Information Sciences, who made her personal accounts available for the collection of money and the purchase of medicines and foodstuffs.

We ourselves have also set out to help. Negolution making its contribution with shipments that will arrive very soon from Spain. The story of solidarity with Matanzas is an ongoing process, thanks to self-employed businesses, artists, Cubans living abroad, international organizations and ordinary citizens.
