Global Community x Matanzas: Shortening distances and saving lives

A friend of a friend. A Whatsapp status, a post on Instagram with a phone number, someone on Facebook who is encouraged to create a group. This is how some people will remember the worst moment of the pandemic in Cuba.

Maribel Tello was aware of what was happening, following the news from her home in Barcelona. She followed several Cubans on Instagram, including a close friend. She watched the news. Therefore, this was also her reality, even if separated by a few hours. That’s why she was encouraged to make a donation.

“My mother was a pharmacist. We have a trusted pharmacy that could provide us with the facilities to get medicines that people left there because they no longer needed them, and that we could use to help the Cuban people,” she told us.

In the first half of July, several Cuban enterprises joined forces to collect and transport donations to the province of Matanzas, which at the time was the epicenter of COVID-19 in Cuba. Global Community x Matanzas, so read Negolution’s social networks, which in coordination with other businesses, the help of the Online Tours travel agency and a score of people from various regions of Spain, facilitated the donation of medicines to Cuba.

“A person I followed on Instagram shared a phone number, through which this aid was being organized, and I contacted this person directly,” explained Maribel, one of the many people who joined the efforts.  She described the work done by the organizers as wonderful.

Once the donations were received, they were taken to the Martin Luther King Center, where a collection point had already been set up, for their subsequent transfer and distribution to Matanzas, as explained by Marta Deus, founder of Negolution.

Maribel does not distinguish between different nationalities when it comes to helping out those in need. “In the end, we are all human. Today they needed help, perhaps at another time we will be the ones in need, as our ancestors were,” she noted.

For this native of Barcelona, social networks are channels that also facilitate affection and proximity between people. “I think it is positive and necessary to use digital spaces to do good, so anything that helps to help is fantastic,” she concluded.
