Recycling glass: Making use of this household raw material

The “International Year of Glass” has arrived and with it the events “Reciclamos” and “Reciclatón” proposed by La Mina and Tercer Paraíso Cuba. The project aims to raise awareness among different communities on the subject. It also includes a contest that has as its central objective the collection and recycling of glass. What is collected will be delivered to various local enterprises for reuse.

Organized by the Cultural Council of the Embassy of Spain in Cuba, such projects seek to stay ahead of the game as regards green living.

On the last Friday of October and the first two Fridays of November, the Habitat Park, located on the corner of Calzada and F streets in the capital’s Vedado district, and the InSurGentes EcoGarden, on Cuba Street between Teniente Rey and Amargura streets in Old Havana, will be the main venues.  The glass will be collected from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

However, if you can’t get there, the team has provided several delivery routes. You can take the raw material to enterprises and organizations that have placed “green points” in their headquarters. You can also contact the cycling community through the BiciSolidaria team or bring them to Velo Cuba’s headquarters.

To participate in the contest you must register with the first delivery you make. You will receive an entry form to note your personal details and with it, also participate in the raffle of the Reciclatón event. Pay attention! The Reciclamos form is made of recycled paper and comes from CicloEcopapel’s own workshops. If you decide to participate, you must keep the form until the last day of the awards ceremony. An important detail is that the material delivered must be clean and free of toxic residues.

Prizes will be awarded for the largest deliveries in three categories: individuals, restaurant/bar/cafeteria, enterprises/businesses/organizations (institutions, offices, embassies and others) and cyclists, based on the amount of glass collected.

The awards ceremony will take place at the Reciclatón on November 19. This huge celebration, in La Quinta de los Molinos, will see an expo-fair where you can meet the beneficiary enterprises and enjoy recreational activities for children.

What are “Reciclamos” and “Reciclatón”?

“Reciclamos” is an initiative to encourage citizens not to waste recylable materials and to avoid environmental pollution.

The Reciclatón, on the other hand, is the result of the efforts of the Redes con Rostros (Networks with Faces) foundation in Ecuador. In Cuba, it is organized as a one-off expo-fair, with the participation of local enterprises that reuse and/or recycling of various materials. Broader society is also invited to participate in the event, delivering waste that can be converted into raw materials for the local enterprises that participate.

Where can I find BiciSolidarias?

This citizen platform seeks to mobilize solidarity aid from the people and for the people.  You can find it on Telegram by accessing t.me/BiciSolidaria (you will earn more points from the delivery if you notify when someone comes to pick up your raw material).

If you’re a woman cyclist join the Bike & Flow on Friday the 11th; you’ll transport glass and then enjoy a yoga session. An experience to connect women cyclists in Havana and promote wellness through yoga flow.

The invitation is extended, or as we say popularly “the table is served.” Do not leave at home the glass that you can donate.
