La Pira places ConWiro at the top of the Cuban video game industry

The independent Cuban video game studio ConWiro is offering a lot to talk about these days, thanks to the success of its most recent product, La Pira, which not only stands out for its almost 40,000 downloads on the Apklis platform, but also due to the excellent graphics and entertainment it offers.

When I interviewed the ConWiro team for our 15th issue, La Pira was not yet on their agenda. However, they set themselves the challenge of conceiving, developing and launching a game in just one month, and they succeeded. Thus delivering the first independent video game monetized through micropayments to exist in the country.

According to Rafael Martínez, leader of the creative team, “the monetization system is of the Free to Play type: you can download, play for free and, if you want, make resource purchases in the virtual store implemented within the game.” Payments for these purchases are made by means of text messages, the amounts of which “are deducted from the bonus or from the main balance if there is no applicable bonus. We get a percentage of income for each SMS and the state-owned company Desoft, which provides the service, gets another percentage,” the young entrepreneur explained.

In an exclusive for Negolution, we learned that an update with significant improvements will soon be released, which will stimulate social and competitive interaction. Such progress is inspired by the desire expressed by Rafael Martínez that “La Pira becomes known by the largest number of people on the island so that they can appreciate the work we have done, and also to serve as the beginning of a better future for us as a studio and motivate other people to create their projects.”

The work of ConWiro, made up of Javier Domínguez (technology director), Juan López (programmer), Orestes Suárez (art director), Lázaro Piñol (3D artist) and software engineers Aniel Ramos and Alejandro González, was registered in 2019 under Decree-Law 373, which regulates the activity of independent audiovisual and cinematographic creators.

“The most important thing in our future is to be able to continue creating video games that users like and, above all, to keep raising the quality level of our creations,” Martínez notes. For this reason, the team is close to launching a game that simulates the phenomenon of the ‘Weekly Package’ of digital material, in collaboration with artist Néstor Sire. Also, another multiplayer online strategy game is in the production stage, which will work with national data consumption and whose beta version will be released in two months.

But it doesn’t end there. ConWiro will deploy a platform that will allow video game and app developers to have easy access to the monetization systems currently available in Cuba, as well as an analytics system to provide developers with the possibility of expanding and optimizing their creations.
